Among Spain’s many outstanding luxury properties the Gran Hotel Bahia del Duque Resort continues to gather plaudits. As well as an established reputation it has a plan for the future.
Tenerife’s temperate climate, a balmy 20ºC in winter, has helped boost its appeal as a destination for the luxury traveller all year round. In Costa Adeje, a picturesque part of the south, lies one of its most impressive properties, the Gran Hotel Bahia del Duque Resort.
Set above the white sand beach of El Duque the resort has established itself in the luxury market not only for its location and high standards of service, but also for the willingness of its owners to invest in its future.
‘We are now the highest standard property in Tenerife and indeed in the whole of Spain. We are well-known and recognised for the quality of our facilities and services. Ours was the first hotel here with first-class standards, and we have maintained those high standards with constant investment,’ says the resort’s new general manager Santiago Cabré. Only 15km away from ‘Reina Sofía’ airport, the property comprises three hotels - the Bahia del Duque, the Casas Ducales and Las Villas. Each offers a different type of guest experience, catering for families and couples alike.
Styled after the architecture of the large Canary houses of 19th century, the soft colours of the buildings blend with the rich green of the surrounding subtropical gardens. The villas have patios with impressive views, rooms in the hotel can look out onto the garden or the sea, while the swimming pools and the beach offer guests every opportunity to relax.
‘The property is outstanding. It is a huge space and even when it is fully booked no one is disturbed by other guests. There is still always a quiet place to relax. The location is perfect, as it is close to the beach and there are international shops and restaurants nearby. You don’t even need a car as everything is in walking distance,’ explains Cabré.
Wine and dine
For those who do venture beyond the resort the landscape and coastline of southern Tenerife offer plenty of diversions, whether your preference is walking, wildlife or watersports. When it comes to dining, however, there is no need to leave the Gran Hotel Bahia del Duque.
The diverse range of cuisine in the resort’s numerous restaurants, one of which is located on the beach, includes modern Spanish, French and Italian food, but the newest addition is a sign of ongoing investment to maintain the highest standards of cooking in the region.
The new Las Aguas restaurant is a co-operation between the resort and Madrid-based chef Salvador Gallego, who has held a Michelin star for 18 years for his El Cenador de Salvador restaurant and whose cooking is based on using the highest quality ingredients. The interior has been styled by prestigious designer Pascua Ortega, who is perhaps best known for his work on the Teatro Real in Madrid. The result is a unique and exclusive dining experience.
‘The challenge for me is that I am now the manager of the best property in Spain, which would be the peak of anyone’s hotel management career, and I have to maintain the standard. I am fortunate that the owners are very focused on investment in the property and are always adding new amenities for guests,’ says Cabré.
Earlier this year the resort opened a magnificent Bahia del Duque Spa, with the most sophisticated technologies provided by a team of highly qualified professionals.
The resort plans a new children’s activity park and more facilities for teenagers to ensure it provides a family experience for the luxury market in the main hotel and the villas. Combining an enviable reputation with investment for the future, Gran Hotel Bahia del Duque is set to remain at the peak of Spain’s hotel market.
